Accompany Class is a morning training offered for the freelance dance community in Brussels.
We are a group of freelance dance artists coming together to do this thing called 'morning class' (about 10 people ish). We are not quite sure what this is anymore... We no longer work through companies and we no longer have a clear idea of what to train. From this place of not knowing, we have come together and organised a rotational-system in which we will all facilitate ‘class/training’ for and with each other.
This presents itself as an interesting opportunity not to necessarily reproduce ideas of what a ‘morning class’ is that we adopted from the 80s-90s, but an opportunity to redefine and ask ourselves “what is a morning class, what purposes should it entail for the contemporary artist in our current times in Brussels?” How can we propose a different mode of sociality which promotes practicing together as a means to counter the hyper-fragmentation that occurs in a project-based economy?
What this space can be and how we are coming together around morning training is an open question for us. The main point not being to provide an answer, but to see what each artist decides to do with the question. In this way, these sharings can also be a place of research, a place to fail, a place where the stakes are only as high as one wants.
We also share a feeling that to dance with other bodies is such a fundamental way to train. Therefore we come together and activate these needs and questions by sharing training with each other.
We invite you to join our classes and ask these questions with us.
We ‘teach’ a ‘class’ (or facilitate a space) in order to give us something to do and explore together. This is not a space for pedagogical promotion or professional advancement, but a place for the local scene to come together and train. A way to start the day together and sweat (potentially) together and go on with your emails.
We are not announcing in advance what will be shared as we see the whole project as one continuous rolling question. Feel free to join us in this mystery ride :)
We are not an institution, cultural managers or a space. We are a group of freelance dance artists that have gathered around needs of accessible, regular(ish), free, pressure-less training.
This is a self-organised space by us and for us, of low stakes and low ambition.
You are welcome to join this space and it is also for you.
It is not a space focused on self-promotion or self-investment, but a space of community nourishment through ease and connection.
So far we've working at across Brussels at Charleroi Danse / La Raffinerie, Garage 29, GC De Rinck, Kaaistudios, P.A.R.T.S., Pianofabriek, Studio Étangs Noirs and Zinnema.
